A fisherman suggested the barbel might have been the species of fish likely to have picked up a coin in its mouth (Matthew 17:27). The barbel ate aquatic snails and scavenged in the mud for food.
Others had thought the fish St. Peter caught with a silver coin in its mouth was the tilapia as the male carried its young in its mouth. There have been reports the tilapia may have carried a small stone or bottle cap in its mouth at times.
