Growing Figs in the South for Home Use  USDA publication 1968

While California was known for commercial production of figs the sun belt of the US has been used for the cultivation of figs for many years.  The fig tree ranged as far north as Washington, D.C. and by one account as far north as Philadelphia.  Some species died back during severe freezes.  One fig tree was reported to have grown back from its stumps after a freeze to produce fruit within two years.  A fig tree might bear a bushel of fruit in a year.  They required pruning, fertilizer, water, and chemical treatments.
