ISRAEL PHOTOS IV -- Pilgrimage

                               HOUSE OF ANCHORS MUSEUM

The House of Anchors Museum is located at Kibbutz En Gev on the eastern shore of Lake Tiberias.  Kibbutz En Gev is a fishing kibbutz and has drawn fish from the lake since its inception.  I scheduled a visit to the museum with a tourism official from the kibbutz.  I got a guided tour and found the curator to be fluent in English.  One member of the kibbutz named Mendel Nun has published a book about fish and fishing in the lake (Sea of Galilee) with some information about ancient fishing and indigenous fish that may be of interest to those who read the Gospels.

Mendell wrote that the barbel might have been the fish in the Gospel testimony about Peter catching a fish with a didrachm coin in its mouth.  This fish foraged for aquatic snails and searched in the lake bottom mud for decaying food.  Others testified the fish might have been the tilapia; also a native species in the lake.

The casting net was used during Roman times.  This net is a handwoven replica of what an early net would have appeared like.  Early nets were made of linen spun from flax fibers found in the stem of the flax plant.  The stones at the bottom of the net were net weights.  They have been found around the lake shore; especially during times of low water.  A bow drill was used with a rod and abrasive(s) to drill holes through small stones in order for the net cord to be threaded through.  Some nets may  have been more than twenty feet in diameter.  There were other nets used since the early days on display in the museum.  Maps of ancient harbors, photos of storms, fish, and Roman era artifacts are also on display.
